Downloading a public YouTube thumbnail takes about ten seconds. Here is exactly how to do it and which size to choose.
Step by step
- Open the YouTube video and copy its URL from the address bar (or tap Share → Copy link in the app).

Which sizes are available?
- Max resolution – 1280 × 720, the highest quality (HD)
- Standard definition – 640 × 480
- High quality – 480 × 360
- Medium – 320 × 180
- Default – 120 × 90
Why Full HD is sometimes missing
Not every video publishes a maximum-resolution thumbnail. If the HD option fails to load, the uploader simply never had one, so pick the next size down.
Saving on mobile
On Android, tap and hold the image to save it. On iPhone, some browsers restrict direct saving, so open the image in a new tab and long-press, or use Files to save it.
A note on copyright
Thumbnails belong to their creators. Downloading for personal study, reference, or education is generally fine; reusing one publicly needs permission.
